Calling Your Elected Officials
A simple phone call is another way to reach out to your legislative representatives.
Senate telephone number: 515-281-3371
House telephone number: 515-281-3221
When you call, you will first speak with a member of the legislative staff. Be prepared with a concise description of why you are calling and always identify yourself as a constituent when calling an elected official representing your area. If your legislator is not available, politely ask the staff member to help you schedule a time when you can talk with your representative.
To prepare for the call:
| > |
Develop one to three key messages and supporting talking points to guide the conversation; and remember, over the phone, you may have a limited time to make your case so prioritize your points. Fact sheets for your reference are available for download on the media page. |
| > |
At the onset of the call, identify yourself as a constituent and state the purpose of the call and your position on the issue. |
| > |
Keep the conversation focused on your issue and stay on point. |
| > |
Include a specific call to action, such as, “I urge you to support Iowan’s right for fuel choice and oppose biofuel mandates.” |
| > |
Keep communications polite and respectful, thanking your legislator for their time and service. |
| > |
Follow-up with a handwritten note thanking your legislator for his or her time, support and service |
