Writing a letter or e-mailing your elected officials
To assist you with effective written communications with elected officials serving your district, we have outlined some basic tips and guidelines for effective correspondence, provided current contact information for statehouse officials, and included a sample letter addressing the issue of mandated biofuels in Iowa.
| > |
Maintain a targeted scope, addressing just one issue per e-mail or letter. |
| > |
Keep your email or letter to the point and provide clear and concise reasons for your position. |
| > |
Short letters or emails (250 word or less) are most effective. |
| > |
Site only facts and figures that you are certain are correct (like the information included on this website) and provide attribution for your sources. Fact sheets for your reference are available for download on the media page. |
| > |
Keep communications polite and respectful, thanking your legislator for their time and service. |
| > |
Include a specific call to action, such as, “I urge you to support Iowan’s right for fuel choice and oppose biofuel mandates.” |
| > |
Sign your email or letter including your full name and address. |
| > |
Follow up with your legislator if they do not respond to your outreach. |
